FAQ

A psychologist uses evidence-based psychotherapeutic and approaches to support your mental health, while a psychiatrist is a doctor of medicine who works predominantly with complex mental health conditions requiring assessment, diagnosis and medication.

Both our psychologists and psychiatrists are university-qualified mental health professionals who are here to help you improve your mental health and wellbeing.

There is no right or wrong answer on who you should talk to. The best therapist for you will depend on the severity of your mental health issues, the therapist’s relevant specialisations and experience and your personal preferences. Read more about our team here to find the right therapist for you.

The exception is if you have a diagnosed mental illness and are looking for evidence-based talk therapy to help diagnose, treat and manage your condition. In this case, a Psychologist will be best-placed to support you, as they are highly qualified and trained.

Psychologists complete a four-year degree, followed by two years of supervised postgraduate training at minimum, and are regulated by Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Many private health insurers will only fund psychologists, not counsellors or social workers.

If you’re still not sure who’s the best fit for you, contact your GP or get in touch with our friendly team who can help guide you.

In your first session, we ask that you attend alone so we can gain a full picture of your child’s history, behaviours and challenges from your perspective. After this first session, we encourage your child to attend the sessions alone so they can fully open up without distraction or influence.

We tailor our therapy sessions towards engaging with your child on their level – whether that involves play therapy, art therapy, music or other approaches that encourage self-expression – so they can get the most out of it.

We are unable to disclose details of your child’s sessions in respect of their rights to confidentiality but will keep you updated on their overall progress.

Family therapy exists to help families transition through difficult periods together and adjust to the changing needs of a family member. Despite what the name suggests, family therapy is usually conducted in one-on-one sessions with each family member rather than as a group, giving each person the opportunity to express themselves fully and work through individual challenges relating to the family unit.

If you would like to see a Psychiatrist, then you will need to obtain a referral from your General Practitioner. Ask your GP to send the referral to hello@healthmind.com.au or email us a copy of your referral letter if you would like to see one of our Psychiatrists. You will receive a Medicare rebate for your appointment with your referral.

If you would like to see a Psychologist or therapist, you do not need a referral, however if you obtain a referral with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, then you will be eligible for up to 10 Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year.

If you have a diagnosed mental health condition, you can obtain a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which gives you access to up to 10 Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year.

A Mental Health Care Treatment Plan is like a roadmap that you and your GP put together to help you and your therapist work towards your therapy goals.

To get a Mental Health Care Plan, book an appointment with your GP (and be sure to mention your reason for the appointment, because it usually takes a little longer than usual).

Your appointment cost will vary based on the rebates, private health insurance, and other factors affecting your appointment.

If you would like to clarify the current rates for the services you are looking for, please get in touch.

It’s easy to book an appointment. Simply contact us on (08) 6183 1908 or hello@healthmind.com.au, or fill in the form here to find a clinician and time that suits you via Health Engine.
